A TRIP TO GALLE

When I was in grade 09, I went to Gall for the first time. On that day we went to school around 4.00 a.m., because our teachers arranged to go there early. My friends and I waited anxiously for that day to come.

Around at 4.50 a.m. we started our journey. We went that journey by four busses. At first we went to Kaluthara to worship "Kaluthara Bodhiya". After that we went to see "Madoldoowa". It's a very attractive Island. Then we went to the "Sir Martin Wickramasinghe Museum". In that place we saw Sir Wickramasinghe's antiques. In this place we get very valuable educated knowledge too. I think "Madoldoowa" and "Martin Wickramasinghe Museum" are some valuable heritages in our small country.

After having our lunch, we went to see the famous old Dutch Fort in Galle. There is a beautiful lighthouse on it. Near the lighthouse, we met a villager who lives in Galle. Then we asked him "How did your village get its name?". Then he told us in sinhala "gaala" is a place where the people keep animals during the night. A long time ago there was a famous "gaala" where people went to the South in bullock-carts. They kept their animals during the night. This "gaala" later became "Gaalla". English people called it "Galle".

After that we thanked him and we returned from there. We got a huge knowledge about Galle from that villager. Few hours later we reached our school around 9.30 p.m. We enjoyed a lot and had valuable knowledge from this annual trip. This is an unforgettable trip for me.
