Other than Sri Lankan festivals I like to celebrate some of the Indian cultural festivals as well. Among Indian festivals I celebrated the Holi Festival several times. Holi festival is associated with the story of the mythical character "Holika". Indians called this as the 'festival of colours' as well as the 'festival of unity'. Most of the Indians celebrate this.
Also they said that the followers of the Vedic Religion celebrate this most colourful festival. They called this as the 'welcome festival for the Spring Season' and also as the 'thanksgiving festival to the good harvest' as well. In Sri Lanka different centers and institutes like Indian Cultural Center, Indian High Commission and other Indian Institutes also celebrate this festival in our country as well.
Using different colours they enjoy celebrating this Holi festival. Indians said that they celebrate this to forget about all the differences such as cast, race, colour, status etc. As I mentioned earlier, our teacher of the institute organizes this festival annually. So we participated in it by wearing white dresses. Firstly we danced according to their Holi celebrating songs. There were plates filled with colourful Holi powder. Some plates were on a table and some were on the ground. Other than that there were huge baskets filled with Holi coloured water also.

Then we celebrated it by sprinkling the coloured powder and coloured water on each other. At this moment we have to apply the coloured powder to the other person's face before he or she applies. Using large syringes we spray coloured water too. Our white dresses totally turned into multi-coloured dresses after we sprinkled Holi powder. It is an absolutely fun moment for us. Finally we tasted many kinds of Indian cuisines as well. Due to this Covid 19 pandemic situation we missed to celebrate Holi festival in these couple of years. I hope we will get a chance to celebrate Holi next year after our country gets normal.
